The Figure Caput Draconis and Its Attributions

Caput Draconis carries a double point in the Fire row and single points in Air, Water and Earth, five points in all.

Reading the four rows

Read from the top down, the rows are Fire, Air, Water and Earth. In the common reading a single point marks the element active and a double point marks it passive, so this figure reads as three elements active under a passive Fire. The lower three rows being alike is what gives the figure its characteristic shape, a broad head over a narrow body, and the shape is the reason for the name.

What flipping it produces

Turn every row from single to double and back and Caput Draconis becomes Laetitia. The pairing is structural rather than interpretive: nothing in the traditional meanings of the two figures obliges them to be read together, and the handbooks generally do not.

The attributions

This atlas records Caput Draconis under the North Node and the element Earth, with no zodiacal sign. The nodes are not planets, and their use here comes from the same astrological layer that supplied the planetary assignments to the other figures. Because the nodes are points rather than bodies, the figure is one of the two in the set for which the sign column is empty, its partner being Cauda Draconis under the South Node.

The Latin name means the dragon's head, the ascending lunar node. Read in a chart it is generally taken as a threshold, an entrance, or the beginning of a matter, which is a reading of the node as much as of the points.
