From Diocesan Charity Work to a National Network

Catholic Charities USA did not begin as a single organization delivering services directly. It began in 1910 as the National Conference of Catholic Charities, a coordinating body meant to connect Catholic dioceses across the United States that were already running their own separately organized charitable work, orphanages, settlement houses, relief societies, largely with no shared structure or shared voice. For most of the twentieth century the Conference functioned as exactly that: a convener and a coordinator rather than a service provider in its own right, leaving the actual delivery of aid to the diocesan and local agencies that carried the Catholic Charities name in their own communities.

The organization took its present name in 1986, formalizing what its role had already become: the national office of a network rather than a single charity. Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, Catholic Charities USA today coordinates and supports around 168 member agencies, independently incorporated but bound together under one national umbrella, that between them make up the largest private social service network in the United States. Its own reporting states that the network serves people regardless of their religious affiliation, a commitment that predates the modern language of interfaith service by decades and has stayed constant across the shift from loose coordination to a formally named national body.
