A Single Recorded Night

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Every detail of Cecile Fatiman's life outside a single August night comes from other people's records, never her own. What is repeated across the sources is this: on August 14, 1791, in woods called Bois Caiman near Le Cap, she stood beside the houngan Dutty Boukman before a gathering usually put at some two hundred enslaved people drawn from plantations across the northern plain of Saint-Domingue. Taken by the lwa mid ceremony, she cut the throat of a black pig and passed its blood among those present, a sacrifice offered to Ezili Dantor, the fierce protective mother among the lwa. Within days the plantations of the north were burning and the uprising that became the Haitian Revolution was underway; Boukman himself was captured and beheaded before the month was out, his head displayed as a warning that did nothing to stop what had already started. Fatiman is not recorded as captured or killed, and nothing reliable survives about where her life went afterward. She appears in the record as a mambo, a Vodou priestess with standing enough to preside beside Boukman rather than beneath him, and that single fact, a woman's religious authority equal to a man's at the founding moment of a nation, is argued over as much as anything else about that night.
