A Ceiling Painted to Make an Argument

A church ceiling depicting twelve scenes from the life of Christ is not, by itself, an unusual commission anywhere in Christian art. What makes the Diman ceiling worth reading closely is who the people in those scenes are modeled on. Saliba Douaihy populated his Nativity, his Baptism, his Crucifixion, with the faces of local Lebanese Christian community members rather than the idealized or foreign types earlier devotional painting in the region had favored.

That choice landed at a specific moment. Douaihy completed the frescoes around 1936, in the years Lebanon was moving toward independence from French mandate rule, and the ceiling's grounding of universal Christian narrative in recognizably local faces did real work for a community actively defining what a specifically Maronite, specifically Lebanese Christian identity looked like. The panoramic view of the Qadisha Valley framing the biblical scenes on three sides makes the same point in landscape rather than portraiture, tying sacred history to a particular valley rather than to an unlocated holy land.

None of this happened by accident or without institutional backing. Maronite Patriarch Antoine Arida commissioned the work directly, for the ceiling of his own church at his own summer residence, and he was not a distant patron. Arida had personally overseen Douaihy's artistic training since the painter was a boy, which makes the finished ceiling as much a statement about who the Patriarchate had chosen to shape as it is about the scenes it depicts.
