What Continuationist Worship Looks Like

Cessationism is easier to see from the outside than continuationism is, since the second position is lived out in prayer meetings rather than argued in confessions. Cardinal Leon Joseph Suenens gathered theologians and Renewal leaders at his residence in Malines in 1974 to produce what became known as Malines Document I, a theological and pastoral guide the Catholic Church used to weigh the movement without either endorsing cessationism or declaring the sign gifts closed. The document addressed baptism in the Holy Spirit as a fresh release of grace already given at sacramental baptism and confirmation, not a separate rite competing with them, and it treated tongues, prophecy and healing as gifts open to ordinary lay Catholics rather than reserved to a founding apostolic generation. In practice this means a prayer group gathers, often weekly, and includes spontaneous prayer in tongues, sometimes followed by an interpretation offered by another member, prayer for physical or emotional healing, and words framed as prophetic encouragement, all conducted alongside, not instead of, the Mass and the ordinary sacramental life Trent and later councils defined. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal reached roughly a tenth of practicing Catholics worldwide by the early twenty first century, making it one of the largest continuationist movements outside Protestant Pentecostalism itself.
