A Life Gathered from Memory

Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami wrote the Chaitanya Charitamrita in his old age, by his own account after decades spent among the Vaishnava community of Vrindavan absorbing the oral memory of those who had known Chaitanya directly, and the text explicitly presents itself as gathering and reconciling earlier, partial accounts of Chaitanya's life rather than offering a wholly independent record. Its three sections move from Chaitanya's early life and awakening to religious ecstasy in Navadvipa, through his mature years teaching and organizing sankirtana in Bengal and later at Puri, to his final years and the deepening states of spiritual absorption his followers understood as showing the union of Radha's and Krishna's own consciousness within him.

Unlike a conventional biography, the text pauses repeatedly to expound doctrine at length, particularly in its Madhya-lila section, using episodes from Chaitanya's life, including his debates with Vedantic scholars and his instruction of disciples, as occasions to lay out achintya bheda abheda and the theology of sankirtana in systematic terms, so that the narrative and the doctrine are inseparable rather than the doctrine being appended to the story. This structure is why the text functions, within Gaudiya Vaishnavism, as scripture rather than merely as devotional biography.
