Testing the Claim of an External Source

The specific, testable claim behind channelling, that the information or personality expressed originates from a genuinely external, independent mind rather than the channeller's own, has not survived scrutiny in the cases examined closely. Content attributed to channelled entities claiming ancient or non-human origin has, in documented analyses, shown historical and linguistic details inconsistent with the era or culture the entity claims to be from, while closely tracking the channeller's own contemporary knowledge, reading, and cultural environment, exactly the pattern expected if the material originates from the channeller's own mind rather than an external source.

Psychologists who study channelling generally locate it within the same family of altered-attention phenomena as hypnosis and automatic writing: a state in which a person's normal sense of authorship over their own thoughts and speech is reduced or reframed, allowing material the channeller does possess, consciously or not, to emerge and be experienced as coming from somewhere else. No controlled study has identified information in channelled material that the channeller could not plausibly have known, and no channelled entity has provided independently verifiable information, a specific, checkable historical or factual claim unknown to the channeller in advance, later confirmed as accurate. Channelling's evidentiary status therefore parallels automatic writing and mediumship generally: a genuine and often sincerely experienced altered state, without demonstrated evidence that its content comes from anywhere but the channeller's own mind.
