Clairvoyant Investigation and the Chakras

Leadbeater presented his books as direct clairvoyant observation rather than received doctrine or textual scholarship, describing himself as capable of perceiving auras, thought-forms and subtle energy structures invisible to ordinary sight. Thought-Forms (1901), written jointly with Besant, paired that claimed perception with color illustrations depicting emotions and thoughts as visible shapes and hues, an image system later New Age and aura related writing drew on extensively. The Chakras (1927) did the same for the Hindu and Tantric chakra system, translating older Sanskrit descriptions into a Theosophical framework of spinning wheels of colored light, an interpretation that, more than any single Sanskrit source, shaped how twentieth century Western yoga, healing and New Age writing has visualized and described the chakras since.

Neither book offers verifiable evidence for its claimed clairvoyant method, and Leadbeater's wider Theosophical claims, including his role in promoting the young Jiddu Krishnamurti as a coming World Teacher, have drawn sustained skepticism from historians of the movement. His durable influence lies specifically in the descriptive vocabulary and imagery his books supplied, adopted far beyond Theosophy itself regardless of how his underlying method is assessed.
