Evangelization and Empire, Read Honestly

Christian mission names the organized effort to spread the Christian faith through preaching, translation, education and the founding of institutions, carried out by people formally sent for that purpose. The practice runs from the missionary journeys of the New Testament, through medieval monastic missions, to the missionary societies founded from the eighteenth century onward, and continues today in denominational mission boards and in programs such as full time missionary service in the Latter Day Saint tradition.

The historical record does not support a single clean story, and that complexity is stated here plainly rather than smoothed over. Missionary activity, especially during the era of European colonial expansion, was frequently entangled with conquest and empire: missionaries traveled under colonial protection, missionary institutions received state support, and in a substantial number of documented cases missionaries actively worked to suppress local religious practice rather than simply competing with it for converts. In Canada, government funded, church run residential schools removed Indigenous children from their families in the name of Christian education, a history examined at length by that countrys Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The same era also produced grammars and translations giving written form to languages that had none, and literacy, medical and educational work that outlasted the colonial administrations it was tied to.

Historians remain divided on how to weigh these threads. The honest reading in most documented cases is that both were happening at once, evangelization pursued as its own end and an instrument of empire, in the same missions and often through the same people.
