The imperial civil service examination system that historically linked Confucian temples to state education ended in the early twentieth century, removing the direct institutional connection between this invocation and practical academic advancement that had shaped its use for many centuries, yet ceremonies honoring Confucius at surviving wen miao temples have continued in various forms in mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam and other parts of East Asia historically influenced by Confucian tradition, sometimes revived or reinterpreted as cultural heritage observance rather than as straightforward continuation of imperial-era religious practice.

Confucius's birthday, observed on differing dates in different countries, remains a notable occasion for such ceremonies in several East Asian nations, sometimes marked with state or municipal involvement reflecting Confucius's continued cultural significance even in officially secular political contexts. Contemporary students in some East Asian educational contexts continue informal customs of visiting Confucian temples or shrines before important examinations, a popular practice that echoes, in a much less formal register, the historical connection between Confucian temple ritual and the examination system, even where the more elaborate classical school invocation itself is no longer regularly performed as part of ordinary educational life. This popular continuation illustrates how elements of a formal historical rite can persist informally long after its original institutional structure has disappeared.
