Cupellation is one of the oldest documented metallurgical processes in this entire category: archaeological evidence places its use in Asia Minor in the first half of the third millennium BCE, with finds at Troy and in the Cappadocian Tablets confirming the technique was established well over four thousand years ago. Georgius Agricola's De Re Metallica, printed in 1556, gives the process its most detailed early written description, setting out the steps in enough technical precision that modern historians of metallurgy can compare his account directly against the fire-assay method used today and find them essentially the same. That continuity is the single most remarkable fact about the cupel: unlike almost every other piece of apparatus in this collection, cupellation was never superseded by a better technique, only refined in its furnace and instrumentation.
A modern assay office testing the purity of gold or silver still runs a cupellation, using a cupel built on the identical porous-absorption principle Agricola described nearly five hundred years ago, itself standing on a technique that was already ancient when he wrote it down. Few instruments in this whole collection can claim a working life stretching across five thousand years without ever being replaced by something fundamentally different.
