An Organization That Outlived Its Founder's Name

The organization Berg started carried four different names in three decades, Children of God in 1968, Family of Love in 1978, The Family in 1991 and The Family International in 2004, and each change marked a real shift in how the group presented itself to the outside world rather than a simple rebrand. By 1994, the year Berg died in Portugal, the movement counted roughly nine thousand members spread across fifty countries, evidence that his letters had built something that ran well past any single congregation or country. That international spread is also why the organization's later history is inseparable from the scrutiny it drew: practices tied to Berg's own instructions during the movement's earlier decades prompted child welfare investigations in multiple jurisdictions, and The Family International has spent much of its recent history publicly distancing its current teaching from that period. Berg himself never again appeared under his own name after building the movement into something too large for any one identity to lead visibly, governing instead through the written directives that were, by the end, effectively the only Berg his followers ever encountered. He died on 1 October 1994 at the age of seventy five, having spent his final years in seclusion, and leadership passed to his longtime partner Karen Zerby, who continued directing the organization through the same model of circulated letters that Berg had built it around from the start.
