The Earlier Layer of a Growing System

Dee compiled De Heptarchia Mystica from sessions held with Edward Kelley in 1582 and 1583, making it one of the earliest organized products of their scrying partnership, predating the Great Table material and much of the Aethyr work that followed in later years of their collaboration. Read alongside Dee's other Enochian writings in sequence, it shows a system still being assembled rather than a finished doctrine handed down whole, a working record of an evolving practice that only later acquired the more totalizing structure modern readers associate with "the Enochian system" as a single coherent whole.

The manuscript survives as Sloane MS 3191 in the British Library, part of the large body of Dee's papers that entered the Sloane collection and remained available chiefly to specialist manuscript readers for three centuries. Joseph H. Peterson's modern edition and translation, produced from that manuscript, brought the text to a much wider audience of Enochian practitioners and scholars for the first time in an accessible published form, and this atlas's treatment of the Heptarchia material draws on that edition as its primary modern source, the same edition already cited on the Great Table material this text sits alongside.
