Doctor John's death is recorded in 1885, but no reliable record of his birth year survives, an asymmetry in the documentation of a single life that the historical record simply leaves open rather than resolves. Carolyn Morrow Long's biography treats that gap as a limit of the surviving evidence itself rather than as an invitation to supply a plausible guess in its place.
The gap sits inside a career that is otherwise well attested: his self reported origin in Senegal, his arrival in New Orleans through the transatlantic slave trade, and his standing as among the city's most sought after and highly paid conjure practitioners all rest on documented sources even while his birth year does not. That unevenness, some facts of a formerly enslaved man's life recorded with confidence and others simply absent, is itself characteristic of the documentary record available for enslaved and formerly enslaved people in this period.
Leaving Doctor John's birth year open rather than assigning it an estimated figure preserves that unevenness honestly, a documented case where the limits of the surviving record are treated as part of the historical account itself rather than smoothed over by a number nobody can actually support.
