Craft Meeting the Fine Art Market

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A drapo Vodou made to be carried into a peristyle and one hung on a gallery wall can be, materially, the identical object, and that overlap raises a genuine question about devotional art that Vodou's flag tradition makes unusually visible: does an object stop being sacred when it moves from ceremonial use into a secular collection, or does its religious meaning travel with it regardless of where it hangs. Vodou communities and outside collectors have not settled the question the same way. Within a peristyle, a working flag is understood as consecrated to the spirit it depicts and treated with the same care given other ritual implements, while a flag made explicitly for sale, even by the same artist using the same technique, is generally not treated as carrying that consecration unless it is later brought into ceremonial use itself. The distinction matters practically as much as theologically, since it shapes which flags a house is willing to part with and which a collector can legitimately acquire, and it means that a museum label reading simply "Vodou flag, sequins and beads on fabric" can describe either a devotional object on loan from active religious use or a purely commissioned artwork that never entered a peristyle at all.
