A Voice Heard in a Caravan

What made the settlement at Findhorn a spiritual community rather than simply a well-tended garden was Eileen Caddy's claim to receive guidance through an inner voice during meditation, a practice she first reported in 1953 at Glastonbury, nine years before the family's 1962 move to a caravan near the Moray Firth, and one she had already carried into practical use during the Cluny Hill Hotel years from 1957. Where her husband Peter supplied the organizing energy, Eileen supplied the community's stated reason for existing: from 1965, when a formal group first gathered around the family, that daily guidance was treated as the settlement's governing authority, shaping decisions about the garden, the community's conduct and its expanding membership. Visitors and later residents came specifically because of what Eileen said she heard, not merely because of what the garden had grown, and the distinction matters for understanding Findhorn's identity: it presented itself from the start as a channel for direct spiritual instruction rather than as an intentional community organized around shared belief alone. Eileen was born Eileen Marion Jessop on 26 August 1917 in Alexandria, Egypt, the daughter of a Barclays Bank DCO director, and had already lived through a first marriage, to Royal Air Force Squadron Leader Andrew Combe in 1939 that produced five children, before the Glastonbury visit that followed her request for a divorce in 1953. The voice reportedly told her to be still and know that it was God, words she treated for the rest of her life as Findhorn's origin point.
