In the late 1980s, Elizabeth Clare Prophet taught followers of Church Universal and Triumphant that nuclear war was likely in 1990. She directed them to build and stock fallout shelters at the church's headquarters in Montana, and a significant number of members did so, in preparation for a war she taught as an approaching certainty.
The predicted war did not occur. 1990 passed without the nuclear conflict Prophet had taught was likely, leaving the church and its members to reckon with shelters built for an event that never arrived.
That episode became one of the most visible parts of Prophet's public record, a specific, dated prediction that was tested against events and did not hold. It sits alongside the rest of her leadership rather than defining the whole of it, but it is the one piece of her record most outside observers came to know.
Prophet stepped back from leadership in the late 1990s after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and died in 2009. Between the 1990 shelter episode and her withdrawal from active leadership lay roughly a decade in which the church continued under her direction, carrying forward the messenger teaching she had inherited and expanded from her husband Mark L. Prophet's Summit Lighthouse.
