A Yearly Gathering Becomes One of Africa's Largest

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Engenas Lekganyane established an annual Easter pilgrimage and gathering at Moria, the site that became the holy city of the Zion Christian Church he founded. What began as one congregation's yearly gathering grew, over the decades since, into one of the largest annual religious assemblies anywhere in Africa.

Today that Easter gathering at Moria draws well over a million pilgrims in a single season, a scale few religious observances on the continent match. The pilgrimage Lekganyane established has, in that sense, outgrown the church's own early twentieth century origins to become a landmark event in its own right, one that draws attendance far beyond the church's core membership.

The gathering's continued growth long after Lekganyane's own lifetime reflects the institution he built at Moria, a fixed pilgrimage site that gave the Zion Christian Church a yearly focal point unmatched by most other African Initiated Churches tracing to the same early Zionist healing tradition.

A single annual gathering, established by one founder at one site, becoming one of the largest religious assemblies on an entire continent is an uncommon trajectory, and it began with Lekganyane's own decision to make Moria the fixed center of his church's religious calendar.
