The Theosophical Texts

This group gathers the core textual output of Theosophy, the modern esoteric movement Helena Blavatsky founded with Henry Steel Olcott in New York in 1875. Blavatsky's own two major works anchor it: Isis Unveiled (1877), a sprawling comparison of ancient and modern occult philosophy against contemporary science, and The Secret Doctrine (1888), her later and more systematic account of cosmic and human evolution across vast cycles, presented as a commentary on the Stanzas of Dzyan and attributed in part to communications from a hidden brotherhood of spiritual teachers Theosophists call the Ascended Masters.

Around this core sits the movement's borrowed and adapted vocabulary. The Akashic Records, an idea of a universal record of all events accessible to trained perception, draws on the Sanskrit akasha but gives it a Theosophical framing distinct from the term's earlier Hindu and Buddhist uses. Od, or the Odic force, and Vril name two further currents of proposed subtle energy: Od borrowed from the nineteenth-century researcher Karl von Reichenbach, Vril popularised by Edward Bulwer-Lytton's 1871 novel The Coming Race, both absorbed into Theosophical and wider occult writing as names for a universal force underlying visible phenomena. Godwin's history situates this literature within the broader nineteenth-century occult revival, showing how far Theosophy's synthesis drew on contemporary spiritualism, comparative religion and pseudo-scientific vocabulary as much as on the Eastern sources it claimed to transmit.
