Ethel and Its Elder Futhark Cognate, Othala

Ethel is the twenty third of the twenty four Futhorc runes carried from the Elder Futhark, its name and reading a direct continuation of Othala, whose own name likewise concerns ancestral or inherited land, both traditions closing their shared twenty four rune sequence on this note of settled, rightfully held property before Daeg's final stanza and the futhorc's own later additions extend the row further.

Othala also closes the third of the Elder Futhark's three aettir, so Ethel's position as the penultimate of the twenty four inherited Futhorc runes mirrors a structural closing point the Elder Futhark row already carried, the same near coincidence of position noted earlier for Haegl opening the second aett and its futhorc counterpart opening the row's middle section.

R. I. Page's account notes Ethel's sound value, the diphthong oe, as one of the row's more specialised vowel signs, part of the increasingly fine phonetic distinctions the later inherited runes were adapted to represent as Old English orthography developed beyond what the Elder Futhark's original twenty four signs, designed for an earlier stage of the language, had needed to distinguish. Page situates Othala's own closing role in the Elder Futhark's third aett as further evidence that the row's overall order was fixed and meaningful to its users well before the Old English tradition inherited and extended it into the longer futhorc sequence.
