Anahata and the Modern Correspondence

Anahata, the Heart chakra, is described in classical Sanskrit sources through its own seed syllable, its lotus imagery and its presiding deities, with no reference to Western musical pitch. Its pairing with the note F belongs to the modern chakra-tone correspondence system built up through twentieth century Theosophical and New Age writing, continuing the same ascending mapping of scale degree to chakra used throughout these entries, F as the fourth degree paired with the fourth chakra.

Anahata's name is sometimes translated as unstruck or unbeaten, referring in its original context to a sound produced without any two things striking together, a mystical concept distinct from and considerably older than the specific modern claim that the chakra resonates with the pitch F; conflating the two, treating the unstruck sound of classical yogic philosophy as though it specifically meant the note F on a Western scale, is a modern reading imported onto an older and differently framed idea.
