BLIA and the One Branch That Files a Public Form 990

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Fo Guang Shan remains active today as one of Taiwan's largest Buddhist organizations, with temples and cultural and educational branches in dozens of countries and an affiliated lay association, Buddha's Light International Association, known by its initials BLIA, that carries the order's teaching to lay practitioners outside the ordained monastic community itself. The order publishes an annual record of its activities, titled Our Report, but no single consolidated audited financial statement covering its worldwide operations is publicly available, a gap common among religious organizations operating across many different countries and legal jurisdictions at once.

The clearest documented financial figures instead come from BLIA's own United States branch, which, as a US registered nonprofit organization, voluntarily files a public Internal Revenue Service Form 990 each year, giving outside observers a verifiable window into at least one part of a global organization whose full worldwide finances are not otherwise published in one place. That US branch is one of dozens of BLIA chapters worldwide, most of them operating under the disclosure rules of their own countries rather than the American nonprofit filing regime, so the publicly documented US figures describe one national chapter's finances rather than the order's combined international scale.
