Before the Table: Practice Across Traditions

Footwashing as an ordinance travelled beyond its Anabaptist origin into several unrelated church families, each attaching it to its own theology. The Amish and most Mennonite bodies perform it as Dirk Philips and the Dordrecht Confession describe, typically before or alongside the Lord's Supper. The Church of God, Anderson, a Holiness body with no Anabaptist ancestry, keeps it on the same conviction that the practice is commanded rather than symbolic. The Seventh day Adventist church places it immediately before communion and names it explicitly the ordinance of humility, treating the two rites as one connected observance rather than separate events on the calendar. What unites these otherwise distinct traditions is not shared history but a shared reading of John thirteen as binding instruction, arrived at independently by groups with little direct theological contact. Because the practice is recorded here as a belief rather than as a bare ritual description, the point being preserved is the argument each tradition makes for it, a command received from Christ, rather than the physical action itself, which varies in detail from one congregation to the next. Even among churches that share the practice, timing differs: some attach it to an annual observance, others repeat it whenever communion itself is celebrated, so the ordinance's frequency varies as much across these traditions as its exact theological grounding does.
