From Cable Box to Social Feed

A television channel built around a single pay television platform faces an obvious risk when that platform changes, and Taoist TV lived through the change twice. After its 2004 launch on Hong Kong Broadband Television's bbTV service, the channel moved onto TVB Pay Vision at channel 39, then onto nowTV at channel 550 starting in January 2016, following the same slow consolidation of Hong Kong's pay television market that reshaped where most of the city's channels could be found. Each move kept the same programming reaching the same audience, just through a different set-top box.

The move that mattered came on January 28, 2019, when Taoist TV left pay television carriage altogether rather than negotiating a fourth platform deal. Fung Ying Seen Koon's own account describes the change as a deliberate transformation rather than a retreat: the channel shifted entirely onto video sharing sites and social media, and that September opened a new production facility built for that format rather than for a broadcast studio. Fifteen years after becoming the first channel of its kind, the institution behind it chose to keep producing the same lectures, temple tours and cultural programming under a different technical shape rather than let the channel end with its last cable contract.
