A Full Washing Compared Across Traditions

Ghusl sits alongside a small family of full-body ritual immersions found across religious traditions that separately concluded that certain states of the body require washing the whole person rather than a partial rite, and comparing them shows both a shared intuition and real differences in what triggers the requirement. Jewish law's mikveh immersion is triggered by an overlapping but not identical set of occasions, chiefly the end of a woman's menstrual period and, for some communities, conversion and immersion of new vessels, and unlike ghusl it requires a specifically constructed body of water meeting detailed technical requirements about its source and volume, a stricter physical requirement than ghusl, which may be performed with any sufficient clean water including a shower. Christian baptism, a single full immersion rather than a repeated obligation, marks entry into the faith rather than recurring bodily states, which places it in a different category altogether despite the shared physical action of water covering the whole body.

Within Islam itself, the practical performance of ghusl varies with local custom far more than the jurisprudential texts might suggest, since the schools agree on the legal minimum, water reaching every part of the body, while everyday practice in many communities has elaborated a specific sequence, beginning with the private parts, then the whole body from right to left, that is taught as etiquette rather than strict legal requirement, so that what a Muslim in one region considers the ordinary way to perform ghusl can differ noticeably in sequence from practice elsewhere while remaining equally valid under the same underlying law.
