One Setting of Psalm 51 Outlasts a Whole Career

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Gregorio Allegri is remembered today almost entirely for a single composition, his setting of Psalm 51 written for the Holy Week Tenebrae services of the Sistine Chapel. Reserved for centuries to the Sistine Chapel alone, the piece belonged to one specific liturgical occasion in one specific place, heard only by those present for those services rather than performed or published as part of the ordinary sacred repertoire available to other choirs.

That restriction lasted for generations after Allegri's own death in 1652, an extraordinary span for a single work of sacred polyphony to remain tied to the exact institution and occasion it was written for, out of an output that otherwise consisted entirely of conservative Palestrina rooted sacred music composed across more than two decades in the Sistine Chapel choir.

The result is a documented mismatch between Allegri's actual career, more than two decades of sacred composition within one Roman institution, and his later reputation, built almost entirely on one Holy Week setting whose centuries of reservation to a single chapel gave it a fame his other work never approached, a single piece standing in for a whole career in how he came to be remembered.
