A Prediction of the New Physics
Hafnium's discovery was more than a matter of naming a city: it was a confirmation of the new quantum theory of the atom. Bohr's model of electron shells predicted that element 72 should not be a rare earth, as many chemists had assumed, but a transition metal belonging with zirconium in group four. Guided by that prediction, Coster and Hevesy looked for it in zirconium ores rather than among the lanthanides, and found it exactly where the theory said it should be.
Hafnium thus became a quiet vindication of Bohr's atomic physics, discovered in Bohr's own institute and named for his adopted city. It has no ancient or alchemical tradition, being a twentieth-century discovery, but its finding marks the moment when the structure of the periodic table was grounded in the physics of the atom. The Coster-Hevesy identification also settled an earlier false claim: Georges Urbain, the same chemist who had named lutetium, announced in 1911 that he had found element 72 among rare-earth residues and proposed the name celtium, but his sample could not be confirmed and the claim faded once Bohr's theoretical prediction redirected the search to zirconium ores instead, where the true hafnium was found twelve years later.
