This haftarah instructs Ezekiel to judge the bloody city, naming Jerusalem directly and cataloguing its offenses in a dense, sweeping list: idols made for its own defilement, bloodshed bringing guilt upon it, dishonor shown to parents, oppression of the stranger, the fatherless and the widow, and profanation of sacred things alongside the sabbath.
The list continues with specifically named sexual offenses, a father's nakedness uncovered, a menstruating woman approached improperly, a wife defiled, a daughter in law violated, and a sister dishonored, alongside bribery accepted to shed blood, usury and excessive interest taken from a neighbor, and extortion practiced against those in a position of vulnerability, a comprehensive charge sheet naming the same categories of forbidden conduct in dense succession rather than treating any single offense at length.
The haftarah closes describing the city's inhabitants as dross remaining after silver has been refined, useless material left over once anything of genuine value has been removed, and announces that God will gather them as such dross is gathered into a furnace, melted down in the heat of divine anger as the direct consequence of everything just catalogued.
