One Form, Two Names, No Single Owner

One symbol, two religious genealogies, and neither owns it outright. Jewish usage frequently names the form the Hand of Miriam, associating it with the sister of Moses, and Muslim usage frequently names it the Hand of Fatima, associating it with the Prophet's daughter, and both namings root a form that is genuinely shared across the region in a specific figure from within their own tradition.

Because the underlying protective use predates and crosses both namings, the Hamsa functions in practice as a regional folk custom that religious communities have each supplied with their own devotional label rather than as a symbol invented inside either faith, and it is worn as jewellery and hung in homes, shops and vehicles by people across religious lines within the region, including by some who would not describe the practice in explicitly religious terms at all. This layered ownership is common among protective folk symbols and is recorded here rather than resolved toward either naming, since resolving it would misrepresent a form both communities can rightly claim without either community having sole claim to it. Both namings are relatively late devotional attachments to a form whose folk-protective use across the region is considerably older than either specific religious label, and Elworthy's comparative approach treats the dual naming as exactly the kind of evidence that shows a protective custom moving through a population faster and more broadly than any single religious institution can claim sole ownership of it.
