Hizb 29 opens Al-Isra with its namesake verse, describing a night journey from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, traditionally identified with Jerusalem, a passage later tradition and hadith literature expanded into the fuller account of the Prophet's ascension, though the verse itself states the journey plainly and briefly rather than describing what followed it.
The sura then sets out an extended ethical code often compared to the list carried in Al-Anam: kindness to parents specifically in their old age, a warning against extravagance, the prohibition of killing children for fear of poverty, of adultery, of unjust killing, of consuming an orphan's property, and of dishonesty in trade, alongside a caution against walking through the earth with arrogance.
The hizb then surveys the recurring rise and fall of the Children of Israel across their history, and returns once more to Iblis's refusal to bow before Adam as an example of destructive pride. It closes by describing the Quran's own revelation as sent down in stages rather than all at once, specifically so that it could strengthen the hearts of those receiving it gradually over time.
Because the alignment of hizb and sura boundary here is unusually clean, teachers introducing the sixty-part scheme to new students sometimes choose this hizb specifically to demonstrate what a hizb looks like when it does not have to accommodate a crossing partway through, before moving on to the more typical, messier cases this account has otherwise described throughout.
