The Holy Tunic of Argenteuil is a one-piece woollen garment, reddish-brown and worn, venerated in a town just northwest of Paris as the seamless robe of Christ, the tunic that, in John's Gospel, the soldiers declined to tear and instead gambled for at the foot of the cross. Woven without a seam, in the manner the Gospel describes, it is treated as one of the foremost garment relics of the Passion. The basilica of Saint-Denys at Argenteuil keeps it folded away and displays it in full only at rare solemn ostensions separated by decades, events that draw very large crowds of pilgrims. Its claim is shadowed by that of the Holy Coat of Trier in Germany, another seamless robe venerated as the same garment, so that Christian tradition maintains two principal relics of the single tunic of John 19, a tension the churches acknowledge.
