How Haiti and Benin Nominated Vodou for UNESCO Heritage Recognition

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

On 17 March 2026, Haiti's Bureau National d'Ethnologie announced the official submission to UNESCO of a nomination file jointly prepared with Benin, titled Living Arts and Social Practices of Vodou in Benin and Haiti, seeking inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The submission met UNESCO's own filing deadline of 31 March 2026 for nominations to be considered in the Intergovernmental Committee's 2027 cycle, placing the joint file among that cycle's candidates rather than a later one.

Both governments' accounts describe a nomination file developed with direct input from Vodou practitioners, community leaders, priests and priestesses, and cultural experts drawn from both Haiti and Benin, naming the file as a joint work of the two countries' own Vodou communities rather than a document written about them from outside.

If inscribed, the nomination would join Haiti's existing UNESCO recognized intangible heritage, which already includes its Joumou soup tradition and its Compas music, adding a third form of Haitian cultural heritage to the same international list.

What the March 2026 submission changed for Vodou's standing was moving a joint Haitian and Benin nomination past its national preparation stage and into UNESCO's own 2027 review cycle, the recognition process a living tradition practiced across both countries had not previously reached.
