East African Jains displaced by the 1972 Idi Amin expulsion settled in substantial numbers in Leicester, and the community there organised itself the following year, founding the Jain Samaj Leicester in 1973. What followed was not a single dedication but a decade of ceremony, each stage building on the one before it: a Shilanyas foundation stone laying on 10 November 1983, an image blessing ceremony held at Pali in December 1984, and the placement of those blessed images inside the Leicester centre in August 1985.
The final stage came with a permanent installation ceremony running from 8 to 23 July 1988, an occasion that made the Leicester temple the first fully consecrated Jain temple anywhere in the Western world. Nothing built in Europe, the Americas or elsewhere in the West before that date had carried the same complete consecration this ceremony gave Leicester.
What this completed for Jainism's spread was an arc eighty three years in the making. It had opened in 1905 when Kutchi Jain traders in Zanzibar consecrated the first Jain images anywhere outside India, a foothold later scattered by revolution and then by the 1972 expulsion that drove East African Jains onward to Britain. The 1988 Leicester ceremony closed that arc, turning a displaced community's exile into the tradition's first fully consecrated home anywhere in the West.
