How Narendra Modi Consecrated the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

On 22 January 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the pran pratishtha, the consecration ritual installing the idol of Ram Lalla, inside the newly built Ram Mandir at Ayodhya, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The consecration ceremony ran between 12:15 and 12:45 pm India time. Roughly 8,000 invited guests attended in person, among them religious leaders, entertainers and other public figures, while tens of thousands more gathered outside the temple grounds to watch the ceremony unfold.

The temple stands on a site the Supreme Court of India awarded to Hindu litigants for temple construction in a ruling handed down in November 2019. That ruling brought to a close a legal dispute over the site that had run across decades, and in the same decision the Court separately assigned land elsewhere in Ayodhya district for the construction of a mosque.

At the time of the January 2024 ceremony, only the temple's ground floor had been completed. Construction of the temple's remaining floors continued in the months after the consecration.

What the January 2024 consecration changed was the status of the Ayodhya site itself, moving it from a location under decades of litigation and ongoing construction to one holding a completed ground floor sanctum, an installed idol and a conducted consecration ceremony, even as building work on the floors above continued.
