In October 2008, the Chinese Daoist Association convened its third ecology conference at the Daoist temple complex of Maoshan in Jurong, Jiangsu province.
The conference drew 69 Daoist monks and nuns alongside 120 government officials and representatives of the United Nations Development Programme.
It produced two documents. The Maoshan Declaration set out seven ecological commitments, including ecological education, simpler lifestyles and a Daoist Ecological Protection Network. The China Daoist Ecology Protection Eight Year Plan laid out a detailed sustainability program running from 2010 to 2017, covering temple construction, incense burning, resource management and a prohibition on using endangered species in Daoist healthcare practice.
The 2008 plan built on three earlier documents from the association, its 1995 Declaration on Global Ecology, its 2003 Daoist Faith Statement, and the 2006 Qinling Declaration, which the association had produced at its first ecology conference at the Tiejia Ecology Temple in Shaanxi province.
What the Maoshan conference changed for the Chinese Daoist Association's environmental program was extending a line of declarations reaching back to 1995 into a dated, eight year operating plan, naming a 2010 to 2017 window and specific practices across temple building, incense use, resource management and healthcare.
