The Hung Kings' Festival: Au Co's Legacy as a National Holiday
Au Co's story does not end as literature; it is commemorated today through one of Vietnam's most significant living observances. The Worship of the Hung Kings in Phu Tho, honouring the eighteen kings tradition holds descended from Au Co's eldest son, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2012 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the Hung Kings' Temple Festival held each year at the temple complex on Nghia Linh mountain in Phu Tho province draws millions of visitors for a week of ceremony beginning in the third lunar month. The festival's anniversary day is an official national holiday, with workers and students across Vietnam given the day off specifically to travel home or to the temple itself, a rare case of a legendary founding myth translating directly into the modern civil calendar rather than staying confined to ritual or literary memory. Communities bring rice cakes and locally valued offerings, palanquins are carried in procession, and folk performance traditions including Xoan singing accompany the rites, all framed explicitly as honouring ancestors rather than as worship of Au Co personally, since the festival's object is the Hung Kings' line rather than the mother from whom that line is said to descend. The phrase con Rong chau Tien, children of the dragon and grandchildren of the fairy, remains in ordinary use as a description of Vietnamese national identity, carrying Au Co's own myth into everyday self description a millennium after the chronicles first wrote it down.
