Recorded by a Method Ahead of Its Time, Under Conditions Behind It

Bernardino de Sahagun, the Franciscan friar responsible for recording this hymn along with the other nineteen in the collection, developed a method of inquiry that later historians of anthropology have credited as remarkably ahead of its time: he trained indigenous students in Latin script and Nahuatl grammar, interviewed elder informants systematically in their own language rather than through Spanish intermediaries, and cross checked accounts among multiple informants before compiling the material into what became the Florentine Codex, a bilingual Nahuatl and Spanish encyclopedic work, for which reason Sahagun is sometimes described as a pioneer of ethnographic method centuries before anthropology existed as a discipline.

That methodological sophistication does not remove a harder source critical problem scholars continue to debate: the material was gathered decades after the Spanish conquest, from informants recalling and reconstructing pre Christian religious material under colonial conditions that included active efforts by the church, sometimes including Sahagun's own broader missionary project, to suppress the very religion being described. How faithfully the twenty sacred hymns preserve pre conquest Nahua religious content, versus how much their surviving form has been shaped by informants' selective memory, by the passage of time, or by the pressures of relating forbidden material to a Spanish friar regardless of his evident scholarly care, remains a genuinely open question historians of Mesoamerican religion continue to weigh rather than one Sahagun's careful method fully resolves.
