The Year's Death and the Eighteenth Veintena

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Tititl falls second to last among the eighteen veintenas of the Aztec solar year, immediately before Izcalli closes the cycle, and Ilamatecuhtli's presence there gives the calendar's late stretch a deliberately aged, ending-focused character quite different from the youthful, growth-oriented deities honored earlier in the year. Where Xilonen governs the maize crop's beginning and Tlaloc's rains govern its middle growth, Ilamatecuhtli governs the point at which an entire annual cycle, not merely one crop, has run its course and must be allowed to end before a new one can begin. The Florentine Codex records that her festival's central dance, performed by warriors after dark, was itself named for its resemblance to death, making the choreography a deliberate enactment of the old year's passing rather than an incidental entertainment attached to the sacrificial rite. Reading Ilamatecuhtli in sequence with Izcalli, whose own rites turn toward renewal and the kindling of new fire associated with the calendar's fresh start, shows Tititl functioning as the necessary close that made Izcalli's renewal meaningful, an ending staged deliberately so the following beginning would register as one.
