A Right to Read for Yourself, Answered Differently Twice

Article one presents independent investigation as a Baha'i corrective to inherited religious loyalty, contrasted with taqlid. A structurally similar principle was already central to the Protestant Reformation three centuries earlier, and comparing the two shows how much depends on what institutional authority is left standing once individual judgement is affirmed.

The Reformation principle of private judgement, tied to sola scriptura and the Reformers' insistence that scripture is clear enough for an ordinary believer to understand without a magisterium to certify its meaning, likewise told individuals not to accept doctrine merely on inherited or clerical authority. In practice, private judgement fragmented Protestantism into thousands of denominations, because no shared interpretive authority survived to arbitrate when individuals investigating independently reached different conclusions, and the difference from the Baha'i case is instructive.

Baha'i teaching affirms individual investigation just as strongly while placing it inside the Covenant's institutional frame: a believer investigates truth for themselves and is simultaneously bound, once convinced, to the authoritative interpretation of Abdu'l-Baha and the legislative authority of the Universal House of Justice on matters those bodies address. The Reformation solved the authority problem by leaving it unsolved, treating disagreement as the acceptable cost of conscience; the Baha'i solution keeps the individual duty to investigate while retaining a body empowered to settle disputed questions afterward, precisely the mechanism the Reformation's fragmentation shows was missing from its own version of the same principle.
