Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue. The Popol Vuh names Ixmucane at its very opening, alongside Ixpiyacoc, Heart of Sky and the other creator beings consulted before the world takes shape. Allen Christenson's translation renders their paired role as midwife and matchmaker, casting maize kernels and beans in acts of divination that guide the sequence of creation itself. Ixmucane is present through all three attempts at making people, the mud beings that dissolve, the wood beings that lack memory and gratitude and are destroyed, and finally the maize people, ground from yellow and white corn by the divine grandparents themselves. Her role does not end with cosmic creation. When her sons Hun Hunahpu and Vucub Hunahpu are summoned to Xibalba and killed, Ixmucane is left to raise Hun Hunahpu's first two sons, Hun Batz and Hun Chuen, who grow up skilled but arrogant. When Xquic arrives pregnant by Hun Hunahpu's severed head, Ixmucane at first doubts her, sending her to gather a net of maize from a garden with only a single stalk standing, a test Xquic passes with the help of a guardian spirit. Ixmucane then raises Hunahpu and Xbalanque as well, and Dennis Tedlock's commentary notes that her household functions as the seedbed from which the twins grow into the heroes who will avenge their father. She is, across the text, the figure through whom generations connect.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnIxmucane, Deities Well-attested Source Divinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1SourcesDivinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1Comments (0)No comments yet.
