One Spirit, Many Mediums, One Persistent Question

John King's most documented manifestation came through Katie King, presented as his daughter and the best attested spirit associated with the medium Florence Cook, whose materialization seances in the 1870s drew the attention of prominent investigators, including the physicist William Crookes, whose reported endorsement of Cook's phenomena became one of the most publicly debated cases in the history of psychical research. That a single named spirit control recurred across so many otherwise unconnected mediums, spanning decades and continents, was treated very differently by believers and skeptics. Spiritualists read the recurrence as evidence that a genuine discarnate personality, once established as trustworthy in the spirit world, could work through a series of suitably gifted physical mediums in succession. Critics and several later investigators, including the writer Arthur Conan Doyle, who compared a contemporary portrait of the historical Henry Morgan against John King's materialized appearance and found no resemblance between them, read the same pattern in the opposite direction, as a stock persona convenient for a medium to adopt precisely because sitters already recognized and expected him, and pointed to repeated exposures of physical mediums associated with the King phenomena as evidence for fraud rather than for a genuine returning spirit.
