Josei Toda was succeeded as Soka Gakkai's leader by his own disciple, Daisaku Ikeda, who became the organization's third president, extending a chain of mentorship that had already run from Tsunesaburo Makiguchi to Toda himself. That the second president's own successor was a disciple he had personally mentored, rather than an outside appointment or a committee chosen leader, kept the organization's leadership inside a single documented line of teacher and student across three consecutive presidencies.
The mentor and disciple bond between Makiguchi and Toda, tested by their shared wartime imprisonment, is dramatized in the 1973 Toho film The Human Revolution, a work adapted from a novel Ikeda himself wrote under the same title, meaning Toda's own disciple authored the account of Toda's own formative relationship with his mentor. That layering, a third generation leader writing the story of the first two, ties the organization's own telling of its origin directly to the succession that followed it.
Three consecutive presidents connected by direct personal mentorship, Makiguchi to Toda to Ikeda, and the second of those three succeeded by writing the mentorship's own story before his disciple told it on screen, marks Soka Gakkai's leadership history as a documented case where an organization's succession and its own historical memory were produced by the same small chain of people.
