A Prophecy Read Two Ways

Because Kalki belongs to the future rather than to any completed episode of scripture or history, the tradition treats him differently from the nine avatars whose stories are already told. There is no established temple tradition built around an image of Kalki comparable to the devotional worship centers built for Narasimha or Krishna, since a coming rather than a completed avatar has no historical deeds yet to commemorate in stone. The prophecy has nonetheless proven durable well outside strict doctrinal use. Some modern new religious movements and popular writers have proposed identifications of Kalki with particular historical or contemporary figures, readings mainstream Hindu tradition does not endorse and treats as extrapolation well beyond what the Puranic texts themselves specify. Within orthodox reading, Kalki functions less as a figure to be located in present history than as a structural guarantee built into the cosmology itself: however corrupt the current age, the Kali Yuga, becomes, its ending and a renewed age of truth, the Satya Yuga, are already assured by Vishnu's own nature. The white horse and blazing sword given to him in the Puranas belong to that future certainty rather than to any past or present devotional image.
