This is the only case in jyotisha where a graha owns the sign of its own exaltation, and it makes Kanya structurally unlike the other eleven. The texts place the exact exaltation point at the fifteenth degree. A Mercury there is both in his own sign and at his highest dignity at once, a doubling that no other planet receives anywhere in the zodiac. Shukra, Venus, is debilitated in Kanya, with the low point given as the twenty seventh degree. The pairing of Mercury's exaltation with Venus's fall in a single sign, and their reversal in Meena where Venus is exalted and Mercury debilitated, ties the two signs together as a single axis. Charts are often read across that axis rather than at one end of it. The nakshatras crossing Kanya are the last three quarters of Uttara Phalguni, then Hasta entire, then the first two quarters of Chitra. Their vimshottari lords are Surya, Chandra and Mangala. Because Chitra straddles the boundary into Tula, a planet in the final degrees of Kanya sits in a mansion that belongs mostly to the next sign, and the nakshatra reading and the rashi reading will pull in different directions. That is a normal condition in jyotisha rather than a problem to be resolved: the twenty seven mansions and the twelve signs are two independent divisions of the same circle, and neither is subordinate to the other.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnKanya, Rashis (Vedic Signs) Well-attested Source Divinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1SourcesDivinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1Comments (0)No comments yet.
