A Path Described as Remembering Rather Than Ascending

Because Pratyabhijna philosophy holds that liberation is never actually absent, only unrecognized, the school reads its own bondage as itself a free act rather than a genuine loss: Mark Dyczkowski's study of the doctrine of vibration explains sankoca, the contraction by which unlimited consciousness appears to itself as a limited individual, as Shiva's own play rather than a real fall requiring rescue from outside. The Shiva Sutras, in Jaideva Singh's translation, set out several described means, upaya, ranging from an instantaneous grasp requiring almost no method at all to more gradual approaches built on will, knowledge or disciplined practice, and the school reads these not as different destinations but as different speeds of arriving at a recognition that was always available. This framing carries a distinctive optimism relative to traditions that treat bondage as a real condition demanding a real remedy: since nothing here was ever actually lost, the entire project is one of removing an obstruction to sight rather than manufacturing a liberation that does not yet exist. Utpaladeva's Isvarapratyabhijnakarika makes the same point from the philosophical side, arguing that a doctrine requiring liberation to be constructed from nothing cannot coherently explain why the soul would ever have been bound in the first place.
