Paul Muller-Ortega's study of Abhinavagupta's system describes this consciousness, called Shiva or Paramashiva, as manifesting the world not because anything compels or limits it but as its own free, spontaneous self-expression, spanda, a vibration or pulsation intrinsic to awareness rather than an event happening to it from outside. On this account what appears is not a veil drawn over a hidden, changeless reality behind it, the world is reality itself, freely choosing its own diversified appearance, so nothing needs to be seen through or dispelled for the truth to stand revealed. Mark Dyczkowski's study of the doctrine of vibration traces how this reading places the tradition in direct and acknowledged tension with Advaita Vedanta's account of a world superimposed onto Brahman by ignorance, avidya, a distinction the tradition treats as decisive: Advaita's maya as a correctable mistake is rejected here in favor of manifestation as Shiva's own genuine and joyful self-display, so that recognizing the world for what it already is, rather than negating it as illusion, is what liberation requires.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnThe World Is the Free Self-Expression of a Single Consciousness, Not an Illusion, Beliefs & Restrictions Well-attested Source The Triadic Heart of Siva: Kaula Tantricism of Abhinavagupta in the Non-dual Shaivism of KashmirPaul E.
