A Short Treatise That Outgrew Its Own Century

A locally focused eighteenth century treatise, aimed at Najdi devotional practice specifically, does not usually become a founding text of a movement still being read and debated three centuries later. Kitab al-Tawhid managed exactly that, and its own author's alliance with the House of Saud is a large part of why. That political relationship gave Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's reading of tawhid a reach his preaching alone could not have secured, carrying the treatise's argument from one preacher's local dispute into the official religious position of the state that alliance helped found.

The treatise's reach today is still visible in how much has been written to explain it. Kitab al-Tawhid remains the foundational reference point of Wahhabi theology and a major touchstone in Salafi thought more broadly, and it has been translated and re-explained in numerous later commentaries rather than left to stand as a closed historical document. A short book built almost entirely from quotation, aimed at correcting practices specific to one eighteenth century region, ended up as one of the most consequential theological texts in the modern Muslim world, which says as much about the alliance that carried it as about the argument itself.
