A Legion of Regular Listeners: Watts on the Air From 1953 to 1962

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Watts was one of many volunteer broadcasters KPFA carried over the decades rather than a paid station employee, and the station's own institutional history is not chiefly about him: KPFA predates his 1953 arrival by four years, and it continues broadcasting today as part of the wider Pacifica Foundation network Lewis Hill founded it to anchor, decades after both Hill and Watts themselves have died.

The station's nine years hosting Watts nonetheless mark one of the earliest sustained careers built on broadcasting religious and philosophical material to a general listening public, rather than preaching a single settled faith to a gathered congregation, and KPFA's listener-supported model gave that unusual project a stable weekly home for the better part of a decade. The Pacifica Radio Archives' preservation of the recordings has kept that specific broadcasting relationship, station and speaker together, documented and accessible long after the original weekly broadcasts themselves ended in 1962. Lewis Hill's own listener-supported funding model, built to keep KPFA free of both commercial advertising and government control, is what made a nine year unpaid volunteer program like Watts's own possible at a station with no advertisers to satisfy.
