A Teaching Given in Two Different Rooms

Sakya sources describe Lamdre as historically given in two different registers. The explanation for the many sets out the Triple Vision, a framework of impure, yogic and pure perception that maps the ordinary confused mind, the practitioner partway along the path, and the fully realized result onto a single continuous ground, and this outer framework has long been taught relatively openly as a statement of Sakya doctrine. The explanation for the few is tied directly to Hevajra tantra empowerment and was historically restricted to a small number of committed disciples who had received the specific initiation the teaching depends on, transmitted from master to student rather than published for general study. What is publicly documented is the outer structure just described and the lineage history behind it; what the tradition itself withholds outside empowerment is the inner tantric instruction proper, and this entry follows that same line, describing Lamdre's shape and history without setting out content the Sakya tradition transmits only inside a formal empowerment relationship. This two register structure is not unique in shape to Sakya, since the Gelug and other schools maintain a similar split between widely taught graduated path material and tantra restricted to initiates, but Lamdre is unusual in packaging both halves as stages of one named system rather than as two separate genres a student might encounter years apart and never explicitly connect.
