The Shout and the Record: How Linji's Teaching Became a Text

What survives of Linji Yixuan's teaching is almost entirely a record of encounters rather than a treatise: short, often abrupt exchanges between the master and his students, compiled after his death into the Linji Lu. The text is built around a refusal to let a student rest on a borrowed answer. Linji is remembered for meeting a question with a sudden shout, a blow, or a flatly paradoxical reply, methods later Chan and Zen writers grouped together as "shock tactics," intended not to convey information but to interrupt the habit of reaching for a conceptual answer at all. The most quoted line attributed to him, urging a student to kill any fixed image of a buddha or patriarch encountered on the road, is not a rejection of Buddhism but an instruction against mistaking any teaching, teacher or symbol, however exalted, for the awakening it points toward. Scholars of Chan textual history note that the Linji Lu itself was assembled and edited over generations after his death, so the voice on the page is as much the product of the school that carried his name forward as of the historical man, a pattern common to Chan encounter-dialogue literature and part of why modern scholarship reads these records as literary and pedagogical documents alongside their historical content, not simple transcripts.
